Planting & Care
Best Planting Time: November to March (dormant season) for rootballed specimens – plant immediately upon arrival.
Spacing: Plant 120-150cm apart (centre to centre) for a continuous pleached screen.
Position: Full sun to partial shade. Hornbeam is remarkably adaptable and will thrive in most positions.
Soil: Tolerates most soil types including heavy clay, chalk, and sandy soils. Prefers moist but well-drained conditions.
Support: Essential to install a sturdy framework of posts and horizontal wires before planting. Use 2-3 horizontal wires at 40-50cm intervals to support the trellis head. Secure the bamboo frame to your wire structure.
Planting Instructions:
- Dig a square hole 2-3 times wider than the rootball and the same depth
- Install support posts and wire framework first
- Remove hessian and wire cage only after positioning in the hole
- Backfill with excavated soil mixed with well-rotted compost
- Firm gently and water thoroughly (20-30 litres)
- Secure the bamboo trellis frame to your wire support system
- Stake the stem if needed for additional stability
- Apply 5-7cm mulch around the base, keeping clear of the stem
Aftercare: Water deeply during dry spells for the first two growing seasons. Trim once annually in late summer (August) to maintain the formal shape. Feed in early spring with a balanced fertiliser.
Design Ideas
- Create a formal pleached hedge along boundaries or to divide garden rooms
- Frame pathways or driveways with matching pairs
- Provide privacy screening above fences or walls
- Establish an elegant backdrop for formal borders
- Create a living pergola or covered walkway when planted in parallel rows
Delivery: Supplied as a rootballed specimen. Due to the size and weight of these mature trees, delivery is by pallet. Please ensure access for pallet delivery and have your planting site prepared in advance.
Each tree is individually selected for quality, form, and vigour. Slight variations in exact dimensions are natural in living specimens.
Planting Tips
💧 Watering – Essential for Success
Consistent watering is vital from day one. Ambient rainfall is rarely sufficient, especially in the first season after planting. Water deeply and regularly to help roots establish — this is the main condition of our plant guarantee. Plants that are allowed to dry out may fail to establish and will not be covered under warranty.
Rootballed Plants
Handle rootballed plants with care and do not remove the hessian sacking, netting, or metal wire around the rootball. These materials are designed to hold the root system together during planting and will naturally break down in the soil. Simply place the rootball in the prepared planting hole, making sure it sits at the same depth it was previously growing. Backfill with soil, firm in gently, and water thoroughly.
Potted Plants
Remove the plant carefully from its pot and lightly tease out any circling roots before planting. Place it in a hole slightly larger than the pot, ensuring the top of the rootball is level with the surrounding soil. Backfill, firm in gently, and water generously.
Trees & Tall Plants
When planting trees or taller plants, always provide a strong stake or support for at least the first growing season. This helps the roots establish firmly and prevents wind damage. Position the stake on the windward side and secure the stem loosely with a soft tie, allowing for slight movement.
